You know those Chinese who let their fingernails grow ridiculously long that they seriously hindered the use of their hands?
That was a status symbol (I am so rich that I can have my hands being useless for work)
Restraints are merely a logical conclusion (and much more aesthetically pleasing)

perhaps after automation eliminated the need for work, it became fashionable to dress in a way that makes it impossible to use your hands.
