I rember discussing the text with Grigbertz when he made the drawing. There is no variant spelling; we just got it wrong.

Thanks! I think you must be right about the spelling, since I couldn't find ANY latin roots resembling "peng-".
When I look up "pinguis" in an on-line dictionary, I get: "fat; rich, fertile; thick; dull, stupid;" so maybe any of the above?
